John Goodman’s Great Weight Transformation

August 6, 2010 reports that actor John Goodman is no longer a couch potato.

Goodman, perhaps best known for playing Dan Connor on TV’s Roseanne in the 80s and the giant cyclops in the Odyssey-inspired movie, O Brother, Where Art Thou, has lost over 100 pounds.

I love this quote: “I know it sounds sappy, but it was a waste,” the 58-year-old actor tells PEOPLE. “It takes a lot of creative energy to sit on your ass and figure out what you’re going to eat next … I wanted to live life better.”

Goodman watched what he ate, gave up sugar and began exercising with a personal trainer. The change is amazing, as evidenced by these after-and-before comparison photos.

Other celebrities — Valerie Bertinelli, Jennifer Hudson — have undergone dramatic weight change and have therefore been an inspiration for their fans to do the same. Goodman, who now stars on the HBO series Treme is himself an inspiration.

I’ve always admired John Goodman as an actor, in part because I could relate to his being a guy of size. I won’t be walking down a red carpet any time soon, if ever, but Goodman’s transformation is nothing short of amazing.
