Who is Mr. 300?

My name is Michael Holtz and, until recently, I weighed more than 300 pounds. I had since I was a senior in high school. There was a point when I’m pretty sure I weighed more than 400 pounds but I never stepped on a scale during those years. I was, however, wearing size 54 pants in college if that tells you anything.

Goodbye, Mr. 300 is a personal rallying cry and cause for celebration. I now weigh 298 pounds…my first dip below the 300 mark since a medical weight loss program I followed in 2005.

I’ve been on a journey to lose the weight for about as long as I’ve been Mr. 300, and I expect I will be on that journey for the rest of my life. Like many who struggle with weight I would lose pounds only to find them again–along with some of their friends. I’ve tried every diet program imaginable, and a number of exercise programs.

I also love food, which is why I weighed 388 pounds at my known heaviest point. I have recognized for a long time that my relationship with food needs to change. I’m 41 and I recognize I have to get my proverbial house in order where food is concerned.

This blog is about my struggle with weight, my on/off love of exercise, what I’m learning about fitness and nutrition, and the enjoyment of food. After all, who doesn’t love good food? But, I will moderate that love with the need for personal responsibility, talk about how that’s working for me, and share stories about the people and organizations working to help improve the well-being of our community.

Thanks for reading.
